吉檀迦利  第五章（3）

    我在乡间小路上，挨家挨户地乞讨。你的金辇如一枕美梦出现在远方，我在猜想这位王者之王是谁！

    我的希望倍增，我觉得我的厄运就要到头了，我站着等候你主动的施与，等待财宝从四面八方散落。

    车辇在我站立的地方停住了。你看到我，微笑着下车。我觉得我的运气终于来了。忽然你伸出右手来说：“你有什么给我呢？”

    呵，向一个乞丐伸手乞讨，这开的是什么帝王的玩笑！我很困惑，疑惑地站着，然后从口袋里缓缓掏出一粒最小的玉米献给你。

    晚上，我把口袋倒在地上，在我乞讨来的粗劣东西里，我发现了一粒金子，我大惊失色。我痛哭了，恨我没有慷慨地将我的所有都献给你。

    51. Without Preparation措手不及

    The night darkened. Our day｀s works had been done. We thought that the last guest had arrived for the night and the doors in the village were all shut. Only some said the king was to come. We laughed and said,＂No, it cannot be!＂

    It seemed there were knocks at the door and we said it was nothing but the wind. We put out the lamps and lay down to sleep. Only some said,＂it is the messenger!＂We laughed and said＂No, it must be the wind!＂

    There came a sound in the dead of the night. We sleepily thought it was the distant thunder. The earth shook, the walls rocked, and it troubled us in our sleep. Only some said it was the sound of wheels. We said in a drowsy murmur,＂Ｎo, it must be the rumbling of clouds!＂

    The night was still dark when the drum sounded. The voice came,＂Wake up! delay not!＂We pressed our hands on our hearts and shuddered wi
